I did a segment on Global TV today speaking about printing your photos.Whether its from your mobile device, instagram feed or computer, it’s so important to get them into your hands. Technologies fade – remember the floppy disk? No??
That’s my point.
When you look at the picture below, ask yourself honestly, which one do you want to pick up and hold? Ask a story about, or could look at again and again? Which one would you take if it was your daughter and your house was burning down?
I bet it’s not the CD, USB or strange black thing that’s obsolete. I bet it’s the print. We connect with the visual and tangible. And there’s research that is proving how much seeing photos of themselves in your home matters to your child’s self-esteem in case you needed any more reason to print. To be clear, I am not saying just print, those storage devices and cloud systems are great for making sure you have the back up . I am saying get them off of your devices, create books, magnets, posters, and most importantly create memories.
Here is the link to my interview with Global this morning. I had such fun Global – thanks for having me back 🙂
There is a trend not to print as much, and often not knowing where to print or the variety of print products out there is a real barrier. We have such a fast paced life that there is often not enough time to take the CD or USB somewhere to get prints made. I really do love all those companies for the reasons I mentioned. They have fun, easy to use apps (goodbye excuse of time), great customer service, and awesome products which inspire me to print from my instagram feed or even Facebook pictures. Social Print Studios has some of my favourite products, from the poster of our last vacation in the pictures above and the instagram hard cover book, to the magnets and framed picture of my dog (yes, I consider my dog my family too!)
Casetify is another one of my favourites for phone cases, iPad cases, computer cases. Either custom ones or their great selection of pre-designed cases, I really do like their product and designs. The one below is one of my favourites. It probably looks boring, but to me every time I look at it, it brings me back to Hawaii on the eve of my birthday. Thats kind of the point about printing personal stuff. It doesn’t have to be ultra amazing and mind blowing to everyone else (although thats fun too), it does have to touch something in your heart, mind or soul. And only you can decide what that is 🙂
Artifact Uprising is also a favourite. I love their slogan “Get it off your device and into your life”. Truer words have never been spoken. I printed a soft cover book of my first 365, and just ordered a whole bunch of postcards and a calendar – can’t wait to see them!
My kids pour over our coffee table and instagram books, reliving summers, vacations and birthdays. They ask me again and again to read them the one their grandparents made during a visit to Ontario last summer. They walk past the poster of our last vacation everyday, something which reminds us all of what is really important when life gets busy, our time and our family. Then they get the globe and ask us to start to plan out next vacation, with suggestions like Japan, Seattle, or Nepal. Our photos are a daily reminder of our roots, who we are and who we aspire to be. They are the connection which holds us together when we have had a rough day, with a reminder of the fun we do have, and a firm look into the future of what is possible.
Print your photos, they matter; just like the people in them….
p.s Thanks to Musea for the inspiration on the fading technologies portion. And thanks for your inspirational prints and the care and love you pour into everyone.
